Landing a job can feel like a Catch 22. You need experience to be hired, but you can only get that experience from getting a job.

Luckily, there are some positions available that don’t require experience — and they can put you on a successful career path. The landscaping industry is one option if you want to get a foot in the door and don’t have much experience.

A landscaping job can be a rewarding position if you enjoy being outdoors, are passionate about your work, want to make a real change on properties and enjoy working with a team.

Here are three landscaping jobs you could get with no experience.

Landscape Maintenance Crewman

For those willing to put in a good day’s work, being a landscape maintenance crewman can have some real perks.

landscaping crew

The average annual salary for an entry-level laborer is around $30,000 in Washington, DC. A typical day could include mowing, trimming, blowing or edging on a commercial property.

Beyond not requiring any experience, this position will allow you to learn a variety of tasks — from working with landscape tools and equipment to best maintenance practices.

Mastering those skills will make you more marketable and attractive for a promotion. Advancing to a landscape management supervisor position will give you an average annual salary of $42,000 - $60,000.

Landscape Installation Crewman

Some companies have separate maintenance and construction divisions, making the role of a landscape installation crewman a little different than a maintenance crewman.

The average hourly rate for a landscape installation crewman is $15 to $18 an hour, depending on experience.

These crewman focus on installing things like plants and hardscape materials. This can be a great job for anyone who enjoys working with his hands, solving puzzles (ex. laying a patio) and creating something stunning from scratch.

In this role, you would have the potential to move up to a supervisor of one of the construction teams — or even another division.

Crew Driver

While above a crewman, this role still requires little to no experience — making it a great starting point for your career.

The average hourly rate for a Landscape crew driver is between $16 to $20 dollars an hour in the DC area.

You would make sure the trucks and equipment are operated safely, perform labor tasks on the crew and report to the field supervisor. Normally, the only requirement is that you have a good driving record (although experience in the green industry is a plus).

Being a crew driver could lead to a promotion as a field supervisor, which puts you in charge of a team of laborers.
